Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Northern Yucatan Peninsula, Toltec Maya, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. Rare and quite fine stone figure carved from local limestone bedrock - which permeates the region. This sculpture was possibly once part of an interior throne or bench, functioning as a 'leg' support. It probably shows a Bacab / Pawatun figure or possibly a captive in a hunkered, seated position, knees drawn up, and arms upraised to support the horizontal section of a royal stone seat. It would have functioned as a visual metaphor referring to the role of the 4 Bacabs, and the old deities known as Pawatuns who were said to hold up the earth and sky. An important and rare example of architectonic stone sculpture coming from the Northern Maya region. Size: 5" L x 5.5" W x 17" H (12.7 cm x 14 cm x 43.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Saint Petersburg, Florida, USA collection; ex-private lifetime collection of Dr. Saul Tuttman and Dr. Gregory Siskind, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s
