Description:

Pre-Columbian, Valley of Mexico, Teotihuacan culture, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A massive anthropomorphic figure hand-carved from stone of warm beige hues. Some carved details have softened over the ages; however, the figure does display minimalistic features and prominent genitalia. The shoulder blades and buttocks on the verso are especially clearly defined. The arms hang to the sides, and incised lines indicate fingers. Pointing upward in his center is a large phallus. The figure's rounded head presents a visage that is comprised of a wide nose and slightly protruding ears, all topped by a cap-like coiffure. The stone has scattered mica deposits that add some glimmer to the surface. A monumental figure that probably represents a deity. Size: 7" L x 4.5" W x 18" H (17.8 cm x 11.4 cm x 45.7 cm)

Provenance: private California collection, USA, by descent; ex- Alfred E. Stendahl collection, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired prior to 1990
