Description:

Central Asia, Indus Valley, Harappan / Mohenjo-Daro civilization, ca. 2700 to 2000 BCE. A wonderful polychrome example of some of the earliest decorated pottery in central Asia. A round-bodied vessel, the bulbous form upon a round, flat foot. The surface is elegantly adorned with red on black motifs depicting two large grazing antelopes and several sections of stepped designs. A solid interior register of applied brown paint runs along the rim. There may also be a third color - perhaps a faded green? Overall, this vessel is a large and lovely example of early Indus Valley pottery! Size: 7" W x 4.2" H (17.8 cm x 10.7 cm).

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000. This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) and has been found to be ancient and/or of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

  • Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear and pitting, minor losses to rim, body, and base, fading to applied pigment, with earthen and mineral deposits throughout, otherwise very good. Three miniscule drilled holes for TL-testing are visible - one on base, one on shoulder, and one near rim.
