Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, probably New Mexico, Ancestral Puebloan, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A sizable stone grinding vessel known as a metate, made from a porous volcanic stone. The rectangular form is trough shaped with raised outer edges to contain the material being pulverized, and the interior bottom surface is slightly slanted from rolling the pestle tool. Trough metates are like mortar and pestles in that they were developed for grinding herbs and corn into flour, and other materials by dragging a flat or rolling pin shaped stone back and forth - this stone, known as the mano, fit horizontally between the longest sides. A great example of this large tool! Size: 20" L x 14.75" W x 8.5" H (50.8 cm x 37.5 cm x 21.6 cm)
