Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A life-sized grey stone head from a statue, depicting the head of a man. The man is bearded, with the sideburns clearly visible. The eyes are still present, wide and lifelike, and set underneath heavy brows, giving the impression of a deepset face. Above the smooth brow, the hair is visible. A smooth helmet covers the rest of the head, with an interesting attachment on the sides - probably signifiers of rank. The back of the head is attached to a rectangular fragment that is probably from a column or other architectural feature. Despite its weathered surface, this carving demonstrates the beauty and skill of Roman stonemasons. A sculpture like this would have graced a tomb or a public space. Size: 7" W x 10.85" H (17.8 cm x 27.6 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.
