Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A large building tile made from fired clay, a construction material primarily known today as brick. Kiln fired brick had been used for thousands of years, but sun-dried mudbrick was more commonly used by Romans until the early 1st century CE. Kiln drying was faster and more efficient than sun drying, the fired bricks also had fewer cracks and imperfection that would compromise the structure- and so fired brick quickly became the standard building material of the Roman Empire. Bricks came in many different shapes and sizes, and large squares such as this were typical, and similarly sized examples in museums suggest this type might have been flooring material. Size: 13.25" L x 1.25" W x 13.25" H (33.7 cm x 3.2 cm x 33.7 cm)
