Description:

Ancient Near East, Holy Land, late Eastern Roman or early Byzantine Empire, ca. 4th to 5th century CE. A wonderful and sizable example of a coil-formed pottery amphora with a piriform body, dozens of impressed rings along the exterior, a pair of loop handles, and an everted rim atop a squat neck. The protruding base and textured surfaces allowed this vessel to sit in a stable manner atop nearly any kind of loose ground like dirt or sand, and the wide mouth suggests the contents were kept inside via a stopper made of pitch or plaster. Size: 14.25" W x 19.25" H (36.2 cm x 48.9 cm); 19.875" H (50.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Owen collection, Sussex County, New Jersey, USA, acquired in the 1990s from a US-based dealer
