Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 5th century CE. A large round mortaria, made of a smooth greyware, with a wide, flanged rim and distinct flat foot. Mortaria were bowls with coarse sand or grit embedded in the internal surface (which you can feel when you run your hand over this); they were made for pounding or mixing foods. They greyware fabric here may be indicative of an eastern British manufacture, like from the Cambridge area. Size: 12.3" W x 4.4" H (31.2 cm x 11.2 cm)

Mortaria are frequently found in the furthest outposts of the Roman Empire, a sign of the standardized spread of Roman cooking methods. Mortaria were hugely important at forts and their remains are often found in great quantities there - both imported and produced in local marketplaces.
