Description:

Rome, ca. 1st-3rd Century CE. This is a very rare mold blown example of a single handed pitcher, also being a sprinkler flask, with the inner diaphragm at the junction of the neck and body. It was blown with 20 ribs radiating upward from the pontil mark on the base to make a gracefully ribbed pitcher, with the handled applied separately at the end of the process. The rear of the pitcher shows the original rich green glass color and the front has the milky oxidation/iridescence that fortuitously occasionally occurs with this type of glass. Scholars sometimes call this rare type a "squash glass" because of the ribbing which is apparent when viewing the piece from beneath. 5 1/2"

Provenance: ex-old English collection, this piece presently resides in the same collection that was loaned for custom exhibitions at museums in Oregon and Florida.

  • Condition: Intact, no restoration, the deep milky oxidation is chipped off the front of the lip.
