Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A long bronze pin with a zoomorphic form on one end. The pin is comprised of a tapering pointed needle with incised rings around the upper part near the animal form. The crouching haunches of the animal connect to the pin shaft, and the head faces upward. The form is slightly feline in shape, perhaps a lion. Hairpins of bronze, wood, and bone were used for securing the elaborate coiffures of Roman ladies. The more elaborate and precious materials, such as this bronze example, were luxury items for the wealthy and often buried in graves to accompany them in the hereafter. Size: 8" L x .4" W (20.3 cm x 1 cm)

Provenance: ex- estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
