Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A cast bronze fertility pendant in the form of combined male and female genitalia. Two phalluses jut upward from either side of the pendant, with a projecting vulva in the center. A large loop is cast at the top for suspension. This would have been worn by a Roman citizen. While it may seem surprising to us today, it was very common for Romans to encounter sexual scenes in everyday objects; after all, sexual activity was seen as a gift from the goddess Venus rather than something sinful or guilt causing. Size: 3.35" W x 2.3" H (8.5 cm x 5.8 cm)

Provenance: private Colorado, USA collection; ex Palmyra Heritage, New York, USA
