Description:

Roman Empire, the Levant region of eastern Mediterranean, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. An elegant, ancient Roman glass jug, pale blue-green in color, mold blown, cylindrical in section, with a concave base, tubular neck with at funnel mouth and outfolded rim. The strap handle was made from glass that was applied to the shoulder, pulled up and double-folded below the rim. A small trail of additional glass was extended downward from the fold. The outer faces of the handle as well as the underside of the rim have finely ribbed structures made by tooling. Areas of silvery and rainbow iridescence. Size: 6-3/4" (17.1 cm) x 3-1/4" (8.3 cm) in diameter. Provenance: Ex-private east coast collection; ex-private S. K. Heninger collection, NC, acquired 1970's.
