Pre-Columbian, North Coast of Peru, Viru, ca. 300 BCE to 100 CE. A Viru bichrome whistling jar in the form of a positively endearing otter with a long, tapered spout emerging from the tail end of the effigy jar, an arched bridge handle connecting the spout to the end featuring the otter's adorable visage. Typical of Viru wares, the modeling is pleasantly simple yet very descriptive. This otter has personality. Just look at that cute visage with its round, prominent eyes, perky ears, upturned nose, and wide, incised smile. Notice as well how one paw extends upward while the other seems to be scratching his neck forming a loop shape. The surface is adorned in a gorgeous, lustrous negative resist finish showing black wavy lines and stripes against the red ground. The Viru culture, which emerged on the north coast of Peru at the close of the Chavin period, was later displaced by the Moche Culture in the Chicama and Moche River valleys. This said, Viru ceramics have been found at Vicus further north as well. A wonderful an rare otter effigy whistling jar from this ancient culture of the Americas.
