Description:

Etruria, northern Italy, last quarter of the 4th century BCE. A very rare and unusual vessel that is a hybrid of a peilke and an amphora. Large bulbous base with thin high neck and twin strap handles. The vessel is painted in red-figure technique in 4 panels, each separated by a Corinthian column. The panels include a seated flutist in the form of a satyr, a maiden with tambourine, another maiden in this case dancing, and yet another maiden walking to her left. The vast majority of red-figure vases are painted in two panels with a distinct side A and side B. This one gives equal attention to each of the 4 panels. Below is a continuous band of arch shaped with wave pattern above and grape-vine along upper neck. Size: 14" H x 9" D.
