Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Proto-Nazca, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A gorgeous textile panel of a large form composed of tightly woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in hues of coffee, midnight-blue, marigold, teal, and crimson. The rectangular panel displays several lengthy vertical red and yellow stripes flanked by thinner teal and dark-blue bars, and each is separated by a dark-brown band. Textiles like this were perhaps used as sizable shawls for the living, though their use as burial wrappings for deceased individuals is far more likely. A wonderful example of early Nazca textile artistry! Mounted atop a museum-quality display fabric. Size (textile): 34.625" L x 50.25" W (87.9 cm x 127.6 cm); size (display fabric): 51" L x 66.5" W (129.5 cm x 168.9 cm).
