Native American, Southwestern United States, Hohokam, ca. 900 to 1350 CE. A sizable stone grinding platform called a metate accompanied by a lengthy grinding tool called a mano ("hand" in Spanish). The smooth surfaces of the metate were suitable for pulverizing primarily foodstuffs and medicinal ingredients in large volumes, and the relatively uniform profile of the mano meant less strokes were necessary to complete the job.
