Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Sebastian, ca. 1st century BCE to 2nd century CE. This figure was likely one of an ensemble of figures offered in a Jalisco shaft tomb. Jalisco is one of the trio of western Mexican states (Colima, Nayarit, Jalisco) that produced striking ceramics. Hieratic San Sebastian pieces are known for their stiff postures and staring eyes. This piece depicts an elite member of society - his elaborate ear ornaments, tall headdress, both markers of high rank and status. The long face, disproportionately long arms, large torso and wide shoulders were not intended to depict deformities but rather stylistic conventions of the Jalisco artisans. 13"T x 5-1/2"W x 6-1/4"D Provenance: Ex-George Martin Collection, Georgia, USA All items in this auction are legal to buy/sell under U.S. statute covering cultural patrimony per United States Code 2600, CHAPTER 14 -- CONVENTION ON CULTURAL PROPERTY, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
