An impressive, large Pre-Columbian male figure from the ancient Nayarit region of West Mexico, ca. 100 BCE - 250 CE. Terracotta standing male shown holding a decorated object typically interpreted by scholars as representing a fan. It is likely that such an object was not only practical, but also held symbolic meaning- perhaps indicative of social status. Also indicative of the significant social status of this individual is the large, conspicuous ear ornaments. This example is distinctly of the Ixtlan del Rio variety of Nayarit figures, exhibiting the hallmark characteristics such as the vibrantly-ornate, v-neck shirt, decorated with various colors and geometric patterns. He is also shown wearing a pointed hat with a thick, padded brim- also featuring ornate geometric-patterned decoration. The legs and feet are exaggeratedly large (which is common for this type)- perhaps for symbolic emphasis of some kind, or simply to provide a broad base of support for such a large figure. Measures nearly 15"H. Provenance: Former Bick collection, Florida, USA. Collected circa 1947. - Condition: Intact overall, except for a repair across the midsection of a clean, ancient break, with little loss and minor fill in the break line to blend the repair. There is some ancient loss at the end of the nose, and to the figures right ear ornamentation, as visible in the photos. Otherwise, vibrant original painted decoration and details remain, as well as excellent Manganese and other mineral deposits and root marks- indicative of the age and authenticity of this example.
