Maya Territories, ca. 600 - 900 CE. Terracotta plate depicts an elaborately adorned individual of considerable importance, based on the large head-dressings and fine/flamboyant adornments overall. The headdress depicts a bird-head deity looking upward, with plumage all around. Interestingly, the figure appears to be holding a head or another headdress (perhaps featuring a mask) in front of him. He is also wearing a large back rack with plumage. There is a band of very finely rendered, readable glyphs around the rim. Includes display stand. Measures impressively at over 13" across. Provenance: Former North Carolina, USA collection. - Condition: In remarkable, original condition with no restoration or repaint. Even all three rattle feet are intact and retain their original functional rattles. The fact that the rattle feet are intact, and there is no kill hole, makes this a particularly rare example remaining in original/intact condition. There is only a single, very minor, small original chip/flake on the face of the plate (measures about 1" across) that has simply been re-glued into place by a previous owner. Other than that, there is expected wear and weathering for an authentic, untouched example. Heavy root marks and mineral deposits overall confirm the authenticity of this piece. The glyph lines are worn and missing in some places, but enough remains on most of the glyphs that they could be refreshed/restored by a professional, if desired.
