Description:

**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Panama, Gran Cocle, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A long-necked polychrome vessel that hails from the Gran Cocle kingdom of Central America or present-day Cocle province. Cocle ceramics include some of the most intriguing expressions of visual culture in Prehispanic Central America. Beyond its elegant form, this piece uses design as a visual language - decorated with panels that feature highly abstracted avian, turtle, and geometric forms in black and cream on a red ground. Size: 7.5" in diameter x 13.5" H (19 cm x 34.3 cm)

To the ancient Panamanians, these exquisitely painted motifs would have conjured a known mythic or Shamanic being(s). The geometric design elements were also imbued with powerful symbolism, usually referring to the gender constructs. A nice piece, despite its condition, replete with manganese blooms and root marks.
