Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Olmec, ca. 900 to 400 BCE. A very large, earspool/earflare shaped pectoral, or perhaps an actual earspool, carved from a stunning piece of jade. In addition to the fine artistry exhibited, the jade stone is inherently beautiful, of pale blue green hues with a degree of translucency in certain areas. The round form has a deep 'ear socket' with drilled holes to accept a pin to keep in position. A superb example from the Olmec, indeed the first Mesoamerican civilization that most regard as the forerunner of subsequent ancient American cultures such as the Maya and Aztecs! Size: 1" deep x 3.5" in diameter (2.5 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private R.D. collection, Long Beach, California, USA collection, acquired over 25 years from various major galleries
