Description:

North America, Western United States / Canada, likely Native American or First Nations, ca. 19th to mid-20th century CE. A massive ladle carved from a single sheep's horn, featuring a swan-shaped neck handle. Wild North American sheep species, such as Dall, Stone, and Bighorn sheep, are known for their large, curved horns, as indicated by the Bighorn's name. The ladle's bowl, over 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length, highlights the scale of these horns. Though the history of this piece is unclear, Indigenous peoples of the Northwestern regions have crafted horn spoons for centuries for both everyday and ceremonial purposes. The simple carving, which preserves much of the horn's natural shape suggests it was made for utilitarian use. Size: 10.75" L x 5" W x 12" H (27.3 cm x 12.7 cm x 30.5 cm)
