Description:

Southwestern USA, southern New Mexico and Arizona and northern Mexico, Mogollon people, ca. 1200 to 1300 CE. A large, steep-sided ceramic bowl with its interior painted with a white slip with black zigzag, steps, and triangle motifs. The rim and bowl are red and undecorated, with marks from firing. The interior motifs of vessels like this one may represent the dramatic landscapes in which the Mogollon lived, while the steps likely refer to descending into the center of a sacred space like a kiva. The black-on-white style indicates contact with the Anasazi/Ancestral Puebloan people further north. Size: 12.5" W x 5.75" H (31.8 cm x 14.6 cm)

Provenance: ex Kurquhill's Gallery, El Paso, Texas, USA; ex private El Paso, Texas, USA collection, acquired early to mid 1970s
