Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, late Moche to Sican/Lambayeque culture, ca. 650 to 1000 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery jar of relatively spherical form with an expressive frontal portrait of Ai Apec, the principal deity of the Mochica people. The portrait features a large rectangular head with intimidating eyes and bared teeth, red-orange pigment, and a trophy head pendant beneath. Additional stripes line the exterior of both body and rim. A unique depiction of Ai Apec during a cultural transition period! Size: 9" W x 9.25" H (22.9 cm x 23.5 cm)
