Description:

Pre-Columbian, Post Classic Period, Mixtec or Aztec, central Mexico, ca. 1200 to 1521 CE. A large, globular ceramic olla with a tiny round, flat base. Above a long, sloping shoulder is a small neck that flares outward into a thick rim. The body is divided into a northern and southern hemisphere with a wide equator. Below it, the body is painted with a labyrinthine motif in thick black lines on a red background, with round, sun-like yellow circles widely interspersed around it. Above it, the motifs become more elaborate, incised and painted pale yellow on red, with imagery that suggests sun beams, flowers, or the spread tailfeathers of a male turkey. Size: 9.8" W x 11.9" H (24.9 cm x 30.2 cm)
