Ancient seas, ca. 2 million years ago. A very nice Megalodon tooth that has developed glossy shades of black, grey, and beige through the process of fossilization. The edges of the tooth are somewhat worn, but the surviving ridges of the serrated edges suggest they would have been incredibly sharp while the animal was still alive. The upper enamel portion also displays a plethora of vertical striations which are two additional results of fossilization. A beautiful example of one of the most ferocious hunters of the ancient waters! Size: 4.75" H (12.1 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand; note the tooth leans on a slight angle, hence it is the same height when on the stand.

Megalodon (Carcharodon megalodon, literally "big tooth"), thought to have become extinct 1.6 million years ago, is the largest known member of the shark family. Prior to 1666, when naturalist Nicolaus Steno studied shark teeth and realized the error, people believed that these teeth were moon rocks or dragon's tongues. Megalodon teeth are all that remain of these ancient creatures, whose skeletal structures - like those of all sharks - were made of cartilage and did not fossilize. Interestingly, a megalodon's age at death can be determined by the growth rings radiating from the centra of the tooth.
