Lot 108
Donated By: Donick Cary, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley)
Pre-Columbian, Guatemala and southern Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 900 CE. A fine deep-sided bowl with a the classic Copador red band around the rim and an exterior ringed by a register of pseudo-glyphs above geometrically-styled monkeys playing with red balls. Four species of monkeys lived in the Maya region in pre-Columbian times: two howler monkeys, the spider monkey, and the capuchin. These animals fascinated the Maya and are common subjects of their artwork, often depicted carrying valuable goods like cacao, symbolized by the red ball. Size: 8" W x 3.95" H (20.3 cm x 10 cm)
Copador pottery was manufactured at Copan and traded widely throughout the southern Maya region. This particular style was created by artisans ispecifically for export, and was probably made to combine popular elements in Maya decoration to increase their value. By repeating certain styles, the artisans creating bowls like this reinforced ceremonial ideas. This is a fascinating piece of history that tells us a great deal about the Mayan economy and society!

Making music happen since 2009
Today, Musack's mission is to give kids and teens a voice through music by providing guitars, drums, and support for music teachers - wherever the need arises.
But back in 2009, Emmy-Award winning writer/producer Donick Cary (Letterman /Simpsons / Parks and Recreation /Silicon Valley) began Musack with a simple vision - raise money to fund musical programs for his hometown high school on Nantucket Island. After a rash of teen suicides on the island, Donick thought about how he and his friends got through their teen years. Music.
Musack continues to make music happen around the world with support from people like you. All lots offered for sale in todays fundraising auction have been donated by celebrities, non-celebrities, and local businesses. Help us help our kids - bid high, bid often!
