Description:

Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A stunning pottery jar showcasing a globular form and skillfully painted decoration of humans and monkeys in burnt orange, maroon, and black pigments on a light orange ground. The exterior displays 2 horizontal registers: 6 seated human figures facing left on top and 8 seated monkeys facing right below. Each of the human figures leans forward and reaches their hands outwards, bending their fingers as though to grab at the circular motifs that separate each of them. All the figures present huge eyes, pointed noses, full lips held slightly open, and lengthy braids that drape down their backs, as they wear loincloths, leg bands, bracelets, and earspools. The monkeys are also seated and lean forward, stretching forth their hands, though each places their legs before them and grasps an object in their hand. A long, spiraling object, perhaps a tongue, extends from each of their mouths and a curled tail rises from their posterior. Size: 8.6" Diameter x 6.3" H (21.8 cm x 16 cm)

Monkeys were prevalent in the Mesoamerican lowlands, with the two most common species being the howler monkey and the spider monkey. However, the monkeys depicted on hachas are highly stylized, abstracting the monkey’s essential characteristics. Monkeys were represented often in various art forms, including stone pedestal sculptures, mushroom stones, architectural reliefs, ceramic figures, whistles, and effigy vessels, as well as hachas for the traditional ballgame.
