Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl decorated with red and black pigment on a light orange ground. Within the basin is a procession of 7 turkeys, each with a large singular eye, a black body, and a red waddle. Turkeys were a staple of the Mayan diet; however, they also symbolized good fortune; hence these birds may have been meant for ritual or daily consumption. The exterior features a register of seated figures, perhaps scribes or astronomers, who reach forward towards Ek glyphs (meaning "star") in front of them. Size: 10.3" W x 4" H (26.2 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marc Amiguet Schmitt estate, Amiguet's Ancient Art, Evansville, Indiana, USA, acquired prior to January 1, 2010
