Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Inca Empire, ca. 1470 to 1532 CE. A ceremonial axe head, smoothed and polished to a dull sheen, made from a deep green stone with even darker green banded inclusions. The body of the axe is beautifully shaped, with a curved blade and two symmetrical, sharp incuts to create a space for hafting, demonstrating the skill of the artisans who put countless hours into making it using limited technology. Size: 5.3" W x 3.75" H (13.5 cm x 9.5 cm)

Provenance: private Andrade collection New York, USA, acquired 1960s; ex Knoedler & Company
