Description:

Western Europe, Germany, Jurassic period, ca. 183 to 175.6 million years ago. A superb ammonite fossil (Arietites sp.) with excellent shell structure - prominent ribs and some suture patterning! The shell has almost been fully excavated, leaving some stone matrix on the verso to serve as a base for the shell to stand on with remains of smaller brachiopod shells embedded in the surface. Small cavities known as vugs have also developed on the verso, which reveal that the material lining the interior of the chambers turned into quartzite crystals. Larger ammonites usually do not survive fossilization - the shells often compress and collapse under the pressure- making this 12" diameter Arietites especially impressive! Size: 12" Diameter x 4" W (30.5 cm x 10.2 cm) Size: 12" L x 4" W (30.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
