East Asia, Japan, late Meiji to early Showa era, ca. 1900s to 1920s CE. This large Japanese lacquer box features a striking lid design, entirely crafted in roiro lacquer and adorned with maki-e, a shimmering gold leaf technique. The roiro technique involves polishing the lacquer to a mirror-like finish. The lid prominently displays a vibrant gold kamon, a traditional Japanese family crest symbolizing a family or clan, depicted as a ring encircling bamboo roots and leaves. The box is elegantly supported by four gracefully curved feet, and its interior is richly lacquered in a bright orange-red hue. Size: 14.5" L x 11.5" W x 7" H (36.8 cm x 29.2 cm x 17.8 cm)

  • Condition: Stable pressure fissures on the inside of the box on the red lacquer where the feet attach, and exterior around the feet. Chips and nicks to rim of lid, and exterior edge of lid. Larger chips are infilled and painted with black pigment. Gilt decorations are intact and excellent. Old inventory label on the inside.

For shipments outside of the USA, customs and duties may apply upon entry into said country, and this fee, if any, is the buyer's responsibility.
