Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Jalisco, San Juanito, ca. 300 to 600 CE. This impressive and large nude female figure is seated, prominently displaying breasts with protruding nipples. Her hands are raised in a gesture of incantation or prayer, mouth slightly open, with a vent hole at the top of her head. The burnished cream surface features additional red and brown designs. Such figures were typically placed in shaft tombs, where they faced outward around the perimeter of graves, characteristic of early West Mexican cultures in Jalisco, as well as neighboring Nayarit and Colima.   • Condition: Professionally repaired and restored. Restoration and infill with new material and overpainting to the base and legs. Legs reattached with break line extending on to stomach area. Repairs are nearly indiscernible. Missing a finger. Nice manganese deposits on the surface.
