Description:

Central/Southern Europe, Italic Bronze Age / early Iron Age, ca. 11th to 8th century BCE. A bronze four-spiral, or double spectacle, fibula with a pin and hook springing from the center of opposing spirals. A small fragment from a plate is attached to the front of the flattened central junction, held in place by a rivet that can be clearly seen on the back of the piece, and which also holds together the two pairs of spirals. A catchplate is cast onto the back, with one end bent down to form a hook, the other coiled to form a pin. Spiral brooches seem to have been an almost Europe-wide fashion and are found in graves as markers of status from the Carpathians to western Europe. Size: 4.45" W x 4.35" H (11.3 cm x 11 cm)
