Description:

Central or Southern Italy, ca. 7th century BCE. A cast bronze disc fibula, named so because the clasp is enlarged into an ovoid disc, with a pair of swastikas formed via a low relief dotted pattern adorning the face, surrounded by a dotted ('beaded') border. Below is a convex ovoid form comprised of five curved bars that resolve to the curled lower end of the pin. The swastika was an age old good luck symbol that unfortunately appropriated to darker meaning in the twentieth century. Fibula were used to fasten the ancients' cloaks and also provided an extra touch of style. This example is quite large and boasts an attractive design with intriguing iconography. Custom stand. Size: 4" W x 6.5" H (10.2 cm x 16.5 cm); 6.625" H (16.8 cm) on stand
