**First Time At Auction**

Near East/Middle East, Islamic world, probably Persia (Iran), ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A mold-formed terracotta hand grenade used in land and naval battles alike. It has a rounded, diamond-shaped body decorated with several horizontal bands which wrap around the shoulder and midsection, a conical base, and a perforated top. The perforation was created to hold a lengthy wick inserted within in order to ignite the combustible materials such as naphtha. Ancient hand grenades were made en masse to be filled only once they were about to be used. Size: 4.5" W x 6" H (11.4 cm x 15.2 cm).
