Description:

Near East, probably Iran, Islamic world, ca. 10th to 12th century CE. A large, well-preserved amphora-like vessel with a round body, is surface lightly scored to give it a ribbed texture. Two strap, looped handles sit on the broad shoulder. The neck rises above the handles and flares outward into a wide mouth. The surface is coated in a beautiful, thick, blue-green glaze. Heavily glazed ceramic vessels from the medieval Islamic period seem to have been inspired by Chinese ceramics, which people in the Near East would have seen arriving from caravans on the Silk Road. This example has a particularly pretty surface, with a golden iridescent patina around the shoulder. Size: 7.25" W x 12.2" H (18.4 cm x 31 cm)
