Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mesoamerica, Olmec culture, ca. 12th to 9th century CE. A beautiful burnished pottery bowl in excellent condition for its age. This type of vessel is well-known from the Olmec and is known as a tecomate, or "gourd", because it replaced the use of actual gourds as vessels. It was hand-shaped using coils of kaolin-like clay into its round form, slipped with a creamy color, and then burnished to have the shiny surface you see today. Size: 6.7" W x 4.45" H (17 cm x 11.3 cm)

Thin walled examples of these vessels are believed to come from the highland sites of Tlatilco or Las Bocas.
