Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Inca, ca. 1438 to 1533 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished vessel known as an urpu (also called an aryballos) with a conical base, a nearly spherical body with a rounded shoulder, a pair of strap handles, and a squat neck surmounted by a flared rim. The obverse side of the body is decorated with an enclosed rectangular band of intersecting red lines atop a white ground. The neck and rim are adorned with alternating red and white horizontal stripes, and a petite nose-like protuberance rises from one side of the shoulder. Size: 8.5" W x 8" H (21.6 cm x 20.3 cm)

  • Condition: Minor nicks and abrasions to base, body, handles, and rim, with a couple of shallow indentations to body formed during the firing process, a slight droop to one side of rim, and light fading to pigment, otherwise intact and very good. Nice preservation to pigment. Old inventory labels beneath base.
