Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Huari (Wari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A hand-carved wooden pillar fragment made from the wood of the huarango tree, with a lengthy lower body of a rectangular profile. The elongated semicircular face is classically Huari and boasts wide ovoid eyes, a bar-shaped nose, diagonal cheek delineations, and a petite mouth, all beneath a two-pronged headdress that is perhaps indicative of the figure being a shaman. Complete pillars were used to hold rafters in royal palaces. A fine example covered in layers of lustrous patina. Size: 9.1" W x 20" H (23.1 cm x 50.8 cm); 22" H (55.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany
