Description:

Ancient Seas, ca. 400 million years ago. A large fossilized ammonite, an extinct marine mollusk that was related to the living coleoid family, including octopus and squid. The fossilized rock has a cream and beige color with some yellow-orange inclusions, and the shell has a wide outer arm which curls tightly towards the center. The name "ammonite" came from Pliny the Elder after the Egyptian god Ammon, who was typically depicted wearing ram's horns that Pliny thought these fossils resembled.   • Condition: Age-commensurate surface wear, small chips and losses to front and verso, with a small hairline fissure along top. Back has been chipped from a rock face and does not have the ammonite fully exposed. Nice earthen deposits throughout.
