Description:

Ancient Greece, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd to 1st century BCE. A large and elegant buff terracotta oinochoe, a vessel for pouring wine, with a trefoil lip, a long, gently curving neck, and a wide shoulder that tapers to a rounded body standing on a flat base. Initially, scholars believed that items like this oinochoe were given only as prestigious gifts from and to elite members of society, but recently, they have begun to reevaluate, especially based on finds from shipwrecks in the Mediterranean. Now we believe that objects like this oinochoe could have been trade items available to a wider range of people in ancient society - functional items rather than just prestigious ones. This oinochoe allows us to understand the ancient economy and appreciate the beauty of all objects including utilitarian examples of the ancients. Size: 8" W x 13.75" H (20.3 cm x 34.9 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; from the estate of a clergyman in the 1960s
