Ancient Greece, Hellenistic, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. An elegant buffware oinochoe (wine jug) of an ample body, trefoil lip with decorative applique knobs flanking the spout and highlighting the juncture between the single, delicately curved, strap handle and rim. The term oinochoe comes from the Greek oinos meaning "wine" and cheo meaning "I pour". Lovely encrustation, root marks, and mineral deposits on body. An unusually large yet graceful utilitarian vessel most likely used to serve wine. Size: 9" W at widest x 13.5" H (22.9 cm x 34.3 cm)
