Description:

Greek, Hellenistic period, ca. 3rd to 2nd century BCE. Very large and realistically rendered hollow-molded terracotta statue of a nude athlete. He stands completely nude with left knee slightly forward, head turned to the right, left hand on his backside, showing strong abdominal musculature, small area of fatty rolls above his buttocks. Size: 9.25" W x 20.75" H (23.5 cm x 52.7 cm); 24.75" H (62.9 cm) on included custom stand.

The sculpted details of the piece are amazing for its realistic portrayal, showing off the Greek command of naturalistic sculpture and the human form. At this scale he would have adorned the house of a very wealthy patron or a temple.
