Description:

Magna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A sizable wheel-thrown blackware column krater with a wide, apple-shaped body, a rounded shoulder, a squat neck with a thick rim, a deep interior cavity, and a pair of applied strap handles which stem upwards from a pair of loop handles, all atop a wide, flared foot. The vessel is covered in layers of black glaze, though slightly misfired areas reveal deep orange-red glaze as well as the pale-orange material beneath. The column krater form is first known to have originated from late 7th century BCE Corinth, and became popular amongst Athenian potters. Size: 13.625" W x 11.25" H (34.6 cm x 28.6 cm).
