Description:

Pakistan/Afghanistan, Gandharan, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A seated Buddha from Gandhara in modern day Pakistan carved in grey schist on a custom wooden stand. As is characteristic of Gandharan, or Greco-Buddhist art, the sculpture shows classical influences in the figure's form and the delineation of flowing draperies, as this region was part of the Greco-Bactrian Kingdom under Alexander the Great. Statues of the "enlightened one" were not made until the 1st century CE. For the first four hundred years after his death, Buddha was represented by symbols alone such as his footprint. This piece was most likley created in the 2nd or 3rd century and although Buddha lived in the 4th century before Christ, this is a relatively early statue. Size: sculpture itself 13-1/4" (33.7 cm) x 7" (17.8 cm); on stand 14-3/4" (37.5 cm) x 8-1/4" (21 cm). Provenance: Ex-Sarkisian Gallery, Denver, CO. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #108319
