Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 CE. A beautiful textile panel of a sizable rectangular form shaped from tightly-woven camelid (alpaca or llama wool) fibers in deep hues of coffee and espresso. The body of the textile boasts 24 full and six partial abstract figural forms with tendril-form arms and hands made from zoomorphic heads, spherical lower bodies decorated with concentric rectangles, and squinting eyes beneath a broad headdress with slanted lateral 'ears.' Filling the open spaces are dozens of characteristically abstract avian figures as well as minimalist phytomorphic forms. Mounted atop a fabric-lined panel within a wooden frame. Size (textile): 18" W x 24.25" H (45.7 cm x 61.6 cm); size (display frame): 21.5" W x 29.5" H (54.6 cm x 74.9 cm).
