New World, Alaska, and Central Asia, Siberia, Pliocene epoch (Ice Age), ca. 100,000 to 20,000 years old. A huge fossilized molar tooth from a woolly mammoth, (Mammuthus primigenius). The long root curves upward to the enamel grinding surface made up by rows of ridges. The original chemicals of the teeth have been replaced in the fossilization process with quartz (silica) and other minerals. Mammoth teeth are highly specialized, some of the largest grinding teeth in the animal kingdom, adapted to crush woody vegetable matter in ancient forests. The massive size of this molar puts into perspective the size of these prehistoric animals! Size: 10.5" L x 3.25" W x 7.5" H (26.7 cm x 8.3 cm x 19 cm); 10.75" H (27.3 cm) on included custom stand.
