Description:

**First Time At Auction**

North America, Pliocene to Pleistocene, Ice Age, ca. 100,000 to 20,000 years old. A fossilized molar from a mastodon (Mammut americanum) with remains of the attached jawbone over the roots. High-crowned teeth like the mastodon's - the name literally meaning "nipple teeth" because of the shape - were suited to mashing leaves and twigs rather than grasses; mastodons lived in forested environments, unlike mammoths, who lived in open grasslands. Size: 8" L x 3" W x 6" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm x 15.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Peter Arnovick, San Francisco, California, USA, acquired before 1995
