Description:

This large and fine head fragment measures approximately 4 ½" tall by about 4"wide (item alone, un-mounted) and about 5 ¾" tall mounted on the simple display stand. This would have come from a substantial Pre-Columbian Olmec figure of exceptional quality, circa 1000 B.C. - 500 B.C. The perfectly rounded head and carefully detailed features make this a compelling example, showing the characteristics for which the best quality Olmec figures are known. The back of the head features a perforation resembling a plus sign, which is known for this type and was made before firing so moisture could escape during the firing process without damaging the figure. Red and black firing clouds are present, resulting from the conditions in the firing environment. Despite being a fragment, this piece displays impressively and is representative of an important and highly desirable type and quality of Olmec figure. Includes simple display stand, as shown. Provenance: Former Mark Bir estate, collected in the mid-1900's. The starting price is the price at which the piece can sell.

  • Condition: Fragmentary, as shown, with no repair or restoration. Minor chips, abrasions, weathering and wear, with mineral deposits remaining overall.
